Michael Brown

     Michael Brown was born circa 1828 at Ireland.1 He married Margaret Mary Whelan, daughter of Morris Whalen, on 25 July 1853 at East Avon, Livingston Co., NY, by Rev. T. McGuire, a Catholic Priest.2,3 Michael Brown was a shoemaker on 4 June 1860 at Flint, Genesee Co., MI.4 He and Margaret Mary Whelan appeared on the census of 4 June 1860 at the first Ward, City of Flint, MI, along with Michael Brown.5 He enlisted on 23 September 1861 in the Union Army, at Flint, Genesee Co., MI, "Brown, Michael, Genesee County. Enlisted in company B, Engineers and Mechanics, Sept. 23, 1861 at Flint, for 3 years, age 33. Mustered Oct. 29, 1861. Died of disease at Nashville, Tenn., April 7, 1862. Buried in National Cemetery, Nashville, Tenn."1,6 He mustered into service on 29 October 1861 as a Private in Company "B", commanded by Captain Barden, in the 1st regiment of Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, volunteers. He was a Private 1 Artificer.7,6 He died in the Civil War of typhoid fever on 7 April 1862 at Nashville, TN.8,9,10,11 He was buried after 8 April 1862 at Nashville National Cemetery, Nashville, TN; original place of interment: Nashville, Tennessee. "A very large proportion of the dead in this cemetery, however, were transferred from the hospital burial grounds in and around the city of Nashville."1,12 He Most of the land for Nashville National Cemetery was acquired shortly after the Civil War. In July 1866, 45 acres were transferred to the United States from Morton B. Howell, master of the Chancery Court of Nashville, in accordance with the decree of the court. During the first few months of 1867, another 17 acres were conveyed in the same manner. The final portion, about 1-1/2 acres, was purchased by the United States in 1879 from J. Watts Judson.
The original interments were the remains of soldiers removed from temporary burial grounds around Nashville’s general hospitals, as well as the Civil War battlefields at Franklin and Gallatin, Tenn., and Bowling Green and Cave City, Ky. There are 4,141 unknowns interred at Nashville National Cemetery.13 He filed for a pension in the name of Margaret Mary Whelan for her children on 8 June 1864 at Flint, Genesee Co., MI. The document was witnessed by an unknown person , both of Flint, both stating that they had known Michael Brown for 10 (or 12?) years before he entered the service and known Margaret Brown for 12 years previous to her marriage to Michael Brown.14

The document was witnessed by an unknown person , both of Flint, both stating that they had known Michael Brown for 10 (or 12?) years before he entered the service and known Margaret Brown for 12 years previous to her marriage to Michael Brown.17 Margaret Mary Whelan received pension No. 50.881 for her children of $8.00 per month per child until they reached the age of 16. The pension money was payable to Abraham Barker, guardian, of Flint, MI on 24 December 1864 at Flint, Genesee Co., MI.18 On 16 January 1867 Abraham Barker requested an increase in the pension for the children of Michael Brown. He also requested a duplicate pension certificate because the first one was lost. The request was witnessed by.19 Her second husband, Richard Farrell, died on 27 March 1867 at Flint, Genesee Co., MI.3,20,6 Margaret Mary Whelan appeared on the census of 8 July 1870 in the First Ward, Flint, MI, along with Francis Dennis Farrell, Johanna Farrell, Bridget Theresa Brown, Thomas Farrell, Elizabeth Farrell, Katherine Farrell and Edward Farrell.21 Margaret Mary Whelan received a pension increase of $2.00 per month per child, payable to their guardian, Abraham Barker approved 5 May 1875 at Flint, Genesee Co., MI,, commencing July 25, 1866.22 She appeared on the census of 1880 at 4th Ward, Flint, MI, along with Margaret Mary Whelan.7 She died on 5 February 1889 at age 53.6 She was buried at Old Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Flint, MI,, adjacent to Bridget Ryan and Richard Farrell.6,23
