If Peter is a brother to Samuel, they must have had different mothers. In 1885 a document signed by John Walter indicated that Samuel E. Walter was the only surviving son of Catharina Walter née Eicholtz but yet Peter Walter's wife died in 1887 and Peter was still living. Peter being a brother to Samuel Elmer Walter is conjecture based on the ages and the fact that the funeral card for Peter's wife, Elizabeth, was passed down to Henry Roggers Walter along with other papers belonging to Samuel E. Walter and John Walter. Lael Jordan thinks that this Peter is John's brother, not his son.
